Term 3/4 - Week 8

Music Jingle

This week is the last week ever in the year that we will going to do music. This last week's music instrument class was changed into the jazz ensemble group performance. It's pretty sad that next year we won't be meeting any of the teachers sooner or later.

Term 3/4 - Week 8

How was My Jazz Ensemble Performance?

I fell really good after I finish my performance, it felt like a heavy weight has been lifted up my back. I think that my performance couldn't get any better than it did today. I was also very happy that nothing didn't go wrong and everything went perfectly fine.

Term 3/4 - Week 7

Ensemble Practice

In music instrument class my group practice in Mr.Harry's class and Mr. Harry helped us a lot, he told us what type of style we should play for the song and also now we can some what synchronize with each other better.

Term 3/4 - Week 7

What do I think of my Jingle?

I think that Nico and I did a pretty good job in composing our finale jingle. The final song that Nico made was absolutely stunning! It has the complexity of the instruments involved in the jingle that creates the simplicity feeling of the song. That's why I was so impressed by it.

Term 3/4 - Week 6

Jazz

In music instrument class I learn about the "Autumn Leaves" song from Mr. John. Mr. John teaches me how to play the song using a style called "Bossanova" style. Bossanova stgyle is when we pick the bass string once and three of the bottom string once and so on and so forth, this will later create some what of a jazzy feeling to the song.

Term 3/4 - Week 6

How Was My Jazz Ensemble Group Progress? (Jazz)

I think that my jazz ensemble group is doing pretty well up to this point. I'm already able to play the whole song of "Autumn Leaves" and also able to accompany my friend's instruments like violin and flute. Overall I think that we can improve overtime as we practice more and more, and I have a feeling that we will give a spectacular performance in the end of it.

Term 3/4 - Week 5

No Class

We didn't really have enough time to do anything in in instrument class, since most of the time was taken up too much for the singing assessment. I hope that for next week's instrument class we will actually use the time for learning our instrument instead of another assessment. As much as I love music theory, I still want to improve on my guitar skills as well, so that I could apply the later on in life.

Term 3/4 - Week 5

How Did My Singing Assessment Go? (Singing Performance)

This week's music theory class was changed into the singing assessment. My group, group #3, Gitta, Adam Reikhan, Jessica, and I, sang the last because one of our group member, which was Adam Reikhan, can't make it to school in time. I think that my group sang pretty well, and I sang well for my part of the song too, but I got a feedback telling me that I need to sing louder.

Term 3/4 - Week 4

Music Notation Class

This week's instrument class got changed to music notation revision test since all of use didn't do that well on the first music notation test. For music notation revision test, I hope that I will have a better score than my previous music notation test, gladly I was able to fill in the whole thing in the revision test.

Terrm 3/4 - Week 4

How does business and industry affect music-makers and users?

Business and Industry impacted the world of music greatly since with the cooperation of business and industry with music they start producing money and artist and music-maker start to have a life of their own through the help of music. This week, we started our singing performance, my group consists of Gitta, Adam Reikhan, Jessica, and I myself. Adam Reikhan and I are in charge of singin part 3 of the song "Close to You."

Term 3 - Week 3

No class (Music Presentation)

Instead of instrument class we are doing our presentation. My group consist of me, Dio, Nico, Boy, and Ikhsan. I think I did pretty well on my presentation slide since I think that I was able to convey my message clear enough to my classmates so that they understand. All and all, my group did pretty well too.

Term 3 - Week 3

How have developments in technology changed the ways in which we engage with music?

Music has developed through time without a single hint of technology involved. Now, with the help of technology, music has now developed new genres of music and also perfected genres that already exist in the first place. Technology created electric guitar and in which guitar is an essential part of rock, this actually means that technology was the one who help the development of rock.

Term 3 - Week 2

Study for test

In class we asked Mr.John about the chord inversions and how to figure out what the chord is by looking at the notes that are used in the chords. We basically did this the whole time throughout our instrument class time, we hope that we will be able to do good on the actual test.

Term 3 - Week 2

What are the functions of music in society?

To me, music is a way to express our feelings and it somewhat played an important part in our life. Music accompanied us in lots of situations and to me music accompany me through thick and thin and help me face problems I have. In class we learn about the chord inversions in major 7, minor 7, and dominant 7 chords. We also took a quiz about them, but I think that I didn't do pretty well on it. I wasn't able to grasp the main idea of the chord inversions just yet.

Term 3 - Week 1

Hotel California

In instrument class, we asked Mr. John about what jazz song sounds good when we play it instrumentally only. I remembered that I can play a song called Hotel California, however it's not really a jazz song, but i just figured that since it sounds really good when I play it in guitar, I decided that I'm gonna learn it. After I did learn some parts of the song, I teach the song to a couple of my friends too.

Term 3 - Week 1

What is the role of music in your life?

To me, music is what brightens up my life. It gives me joy and happiness whenever I listen to it. Music accompanied me whenever I'm happy or sad. I like musics that really reflects the feelings that are contained inside me. Sometimes I listen to songs that I can listen and sing too at the same time. In class we learn about the music notation and some minor scales.

Week 10

Performance

This week we didn't have that much time in instrument class, in fact our instrument class time were used for performance. Mr. John was the one who accompanied us with our 12 bars blues improvisation. When it was time for me to play my improvisation part, I was so nervous that I made so many mistakes.

Week 10

Performance

Reflection Question : How was my understanding of blues after my performance?

In week 10 its time for us to do our performance of our 12 bars blues. Te whole music class played their own improvisation of 12 bars blues according to their groups of instruments. I can now relate to the 12 bars blues improvisation to the Jazz genre, since Jazz uses improvisations a lot.

Week 9

Improvisation

In instrument class we learn about the improvisation techniques that were commonly used when playing with other musicians. We also got to play our 12 bards blues again in class and also got some tips and feedbacks on how to improve on playing our 12 bars blues.

Week 9

Improvisations

Reflection Question : How is my understanding now about improvisations especially in blues.

This week we learn more in depth about improvisation as we received the improvisation techniques that were commonly used by musicians all over the world. We learned the improvisation technique later on in instrument class. As I am getting to know more about improvisation, I now understand how to apply it when playing around with other musicians.

Week 8

Rehearsal

Today we rehearse on playing our 12 bars blues. There were about three representatives from guitar, which was me, Dio, and Cindy. We were playing with two other representatives from violin, Michelle and Ivy. We were accompanied by a piano player who has Sarah.

Week 8

Blues

Reflection Question : Explain how the roles of blues in the development of early jazz

Blues sounds a little bit like jazz, That's why I think that early jazz must have been developed from blues. In the 12 bars blues we're supposed to improvise and make our own melodies from the given chords. Since I learned that improvisations is a very crucial element in jazz I figured that maybe Jazz was the one that was influenced by Blues. Another thing that I find is that Jazz songs and Blues songs are never played the same way twice, due to different improvisations and improvisations techniques used by different musicians.

Week 7

Practice

In this week's instrument class, I spend most of my time learning my 12 bars blues composition. I asked help from Mr. John to accompany me while I play the melody of the composition. Mr. John told me that I need to keep up with the beat, since I lost track when I see some of the rests signs.

Week 7

Practice 12 Bar Blues

Reflection Question : How do I practice and apply my 12 bars blues at home

During instrument class is where I practice my 12 bars blues most of the time to be honest. I practice at home only quite a few time, since I prefer to practice at school with Mr. John, that way he can help me as I'm learning my composition. At home I have no one to help me, so it's quite difficult to learn by myself.

Week 6

Blues

In guitar class we didn't have enough time to do anything, since we spend most of our time in theory class with Mr. Herry. All we did in instrument class is jam around and played some songs. Some of us actually got lucky and get to have time to practice their 12 bars blues with Mr. John.

Week 6

Blues

Reflection Question : My challenges working on my 12 bars blues finale task

Working on the 12 bards blues is indeed quite a difficult task to do, since I need to put in the notes that are relevant to the chords or so. After I'm done with my draft of 12 bars blues I start to put the notes in one by one in the finale software. I had some troubles putting in the correct kind of notes in the software, for example the 1/8 notes and the rests.

Week 5

Playing Blues

In guitar class we asked Mr. John to check whether our 12 bars blues compositions are according to the chords or not. I was having some difficulties putting in the flat sign, since I just started learning it in class with Mr. Herry. When Mr. John checked my composition, he founds some errors in them so I have to fix them.

Week 5

Blues

Reflection Question : How is my understanding of blues and playing 12 bars blues

Compared to Jazz, Blues is not that interesting for me since its kind of sounds the same like Jazz too with a little bit of swing in them as well. Since I just started to learn about Blues, I might find it a little challenging to learn at first. If I want to put it in the 12 bars blues, I will need to follow the melodies according to the chords provided
Example : C7 = C, E, G, Bb.

Week 4

Chords of Singing

Since we were told that we will have our singing this week, some of us practice our singing in instrument class. Mr. John accompanied us using his guitar, and he helped us practice singing too, since we forgot some of the lyrics.

Week 4

Singing

Reflection Question : How do you understand the learning of jazz through your assessments done till now?

Since we weren't given that much assessments about singing in the past few weeks, we weren't able to practice our singing yet. Instead we were learning more in depth about Jazz and everything around it. We were told to do an essay about the history of Jazz, the techniques used in Jazz, and also to research about the different types of improvisations.

Week 3

There were no entry for week 3, since I was absent due to sickness.

Week 2

Mr. John Absent

Sadly this week, Mr. John was absent, so we didn't have time to really learn anything new about Jazz. As guitar students we all spend most of our time jamming together, helping others, and fixing each others' mistakes. We played some music together and sing-a-long together as well.

Week 2

Background of Jazz

Reflection Question : How is my progress in learning the Jazz and it's roots.

My progress in learning jazz is quite slow actually, since it's hard to adapt to the swing tempo that jazz are known for. Some of the chords in the song are a little bit confusing for me to play in the guitar. My progress in knowing the history of Jazz is also quite slow as well, since there's a lot of musicians that were involved in the making of Jazz.

Week 1 16-20 January 2012

When The Saints Go Marching In

In this week's instruments' class, Mr. John taught us about the song "When The Saints Go Marching In." It's a song that comes from the early jazz era, specifically from the band called Dixieland. I think that the song doesn't sound anything like a jazz song, maybe it doesn't have that jazz swing feel.

Week 1 16-20 January 2012

Interest in Jazz

Reflection Questoin : How did you find the topic of jazz and how did the teacher do it.

I think that we as students are lucky enough to see the teachers performed together, and it was kind of them to do so. We were able to grasp a little view on how jazz sounds like. After seeing their performance, I was more interested in learning the Jazz genre. The handouts that were given to us about Jazz music help me understand a little bit more too.
